Memory Lane

Join me next week while I attempt to retrace my steps along memory lane.

Twenty years ago I visited many of the villages and small towns of the central South Island of New Zealand. While on these jaunts, I sketched in watercolour much of the local history and wrote of the colour and of the characters. Over several years I portrayed between 500 and 600 subjects, all of which held an interest for me.

So why don't you accompany me on another one of these little jaunts while I take you all on picturesque journey into the past, and each week we will attempt to update our blog.

Book launch and reading session.

Well, we had quite a successful launch last night, the 17th November, at the Timaru Library. There was obviously quite a lot of interest. I ended up not reading much of the book at all, but decribing how the book began and how each particular story originated.

Helen made a magnificent light supper for those who attended, and all seemed to enjoy themselves.

We all had some good old belly laughs, and I guess that is what the book is all about really.

About Me

noel guthrie: I am a New Zealand artist and author, both of these activities have become a passion of mine, just for the sheer enjoyment it brings. I was 52 years old before I was encouraged to take up art. Never having touched an artists brush or pencil in my life, it was a terriying prospect. I attempted pencil sketching to begin with before having a go at watercolour sketching. Within twelve months, I was offered a weekly spot in a local daily newspaper, providing I could write an accompanying story. Now, I could not string two words together, let alone a story. During the following twelve months, I began freelancing to several other newspapers, some of which continued for many years. Since that time, I have published five non-fiction books of local historical interest, with another non-fiction due to be released later in 2011. My seventh book, a short story humorous fiction, is due to be published very shortly, 2011. These days, I reside in the seaside city of Timaru, in the South Island of NZ, with my wife Helen, of 50 years. As time goes by, I hope to share some of my stories and artwork with you all.
